It’s Another GIRL! {Toledo Birth Photographer}

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

This is a birth post, if you don’t want to read it then be sure to move on! Birth junkies read on!

What a surprise this baby was! In every way. We were so thankful to be able to have another babe. We weren’t expecting that pink plus sign and what joy we had! Both Bean and Cupcake were born at 38 weeks 1 day and this time 38 weeks 1 day comes around…no baby. Mimi had been sleeping over for a week in case I went fast and she and hubs needed to catch again HAHA! Secretly I WAS hoping that would happen.

For the first time ever I wasn’t surprised with an early labor and began wondering when will I have this babe? In my mind I began trying to decide what method of induction I would consent to should I go past 41 weeks! I had been having what felt like real bouts of labor for weeks. They would come for 2 hours or so and the surges would get around 2 minutes apart and I would think this is it! I FINALLY get to meet my baby and then…nothing.

So on 39 weeks 2 days it started again at 11pm I figured well it’s probably that fake stuff again. Hubs and I went to bed and I didn’t even bother mentioning it. They were coming every 5-8 minutes but I didn’t think much of it. I kept running to the restroom but that was nothing new being late pregnancy.

Finally at 1am I thought well….it’s been a couple of hours…maybe I should wake someone up….I dunno. Finally at 1:40ish I woke up Ryan and he starts to get ready and I texted my mom (down the hall). At this point the surges were around 2-5 minutes. She comes in and starts calling the list of people: Doula Kim (who suggested we leave), Rachel (in charge of oiling me), Midwife Irma, and Tabitha (for obvious reasons!). She also called my Dad so he could stay with the kids so she could come with me.

Bean woke up at some point and saw all the commotion and wanted to come. He started crying because he wanted to come and also wanted Mimi to stay. I got his curious George settled for him and we finally left the house around 2:15? Maybe 2:20. We got to the hospital around 2:45 and Doula Kim was there waiting for us. The ride to the hospital was definitely uncomfortable. The surges went from around 5ish minutes to a little under 2 minutes during the car ride. I could see hubs was getting nervous. I made some small talk and even said “this baby has been so surprising in every way I bet it’s a girl because I’ve thought it’s a boy the whole time.” I knew hubs was just thinking where do I pull over if this baby needs to be born in the truck!!?

So we walked into the E.R. and they took us up to our room. I answered a few questions at the desk first and waited for them to find a wheel chair to push me….yeh…so anyway I get up to the room. I used the restroom and they said they wanted to monitor me for 20 minutes and I said I think I can handle that no problem!

In my mind I am hoping I am past 3cm. I was hoping for a short labor. At this point I was still talking and not really thinking it would be any time really soon. Suddenly my water broke. I about had a heart attack in my mind because I knew the surges would grow in intensity and I wasn’t sure how I would handle it.

At this point Irma wanted to check to see how far I was. I wasn’t sure I wanted to be checked since I thought if I’m not far that is NOT information I want but if I am I would love that happy news to help me along. I sat and thought a minute. I did consent and I was 8cm and +2! This was around 3:15 or so. I remember saying “Where’s mom? She’s going to miss it!” She did walk in around this time with coffee for hubs.

I had my first surge post water release and thought I don’t know if I can do this! I mentioned I wanted to get in the tub asap. I had another surge and I didn’t hear water running and I heard Rachel say “I think she wanted to get in the tub..” In my mind (or maybe my gut) I just knew there wouldn’t be time and apparently Irma knew this also.

I had one final surge post water release and said “here it comes!” My body began pushing her out. I’m not sure how many times I felt this freight train but I know overall it was only 3-4 minutes. I tried to get upright because I was still on my side and I wanted gravity to help but I only made it half way up, while my body felt very powerful my upper body muscles felt like wet noodles. So I ended up half up, half on my side, and halfway off the bed.

I remember saying I didn’t like that position, oh golly, and get it out. I made an effort to actually push the last 2 times. I don’t remember much else but I do remember when she came out and they handed her to me immediately and hubs shouted it’s a girl! I just was saying over and over how much I loved her and my body felt of course it’s a girl she is who has been missing from our family.

She nursed very soon after (after I had the chance to look at her for awhile and hold her) and she was so alert while everyone took a turn. While her birth was 4.5 hours and more intense than Cupcake’s it was still very easy on me. I only had 3 intense surges and 3 minutes of pushing. She weighed 6lbs 13ounces, was 20 inches long and was born on my wedding anniversary! Smart girl knows how to get her attention! Making us wait on pins and needles for a week and made sure we would never ever forget her birth day!

I felt most comfortable on my side with two pillows between my knees and then one under my stomach to support it. I felt like I could relax and breathe deeply without closing anything this way.

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

This was after my water released and I was at least an 8cm maybe a 9cm. I did need reminders to relax my face after that point.

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

This is what calmed me. Being held by everyone and being told I was fine and just gentle reminders to relax myself.

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

I remember (I think Rachel) telling me to relax my face, and Kim and hubs would remind me how far I was and how I was nearly done. This would give me the gumption to again relax my whole body and I would quietly whisper to myself that I CAN do this and I am the ONLY one who can. Nobody can do this for me.

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

The power of a whisper while nearing second stage labor. It’s amazing what positive words will do. I was only a couple minutes from pushing here.

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

Still able to relax between surges. Somehow still trying to track them on my phone. I’m not sure why I thought I needed to at that point, but at the time it seemed important.

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

I know Rachel had texted her to hurry and she was in the parking lot coming with coffee for hubs. She almost missed it again! So far her track record is good for getting to my kid’s births in the nick of time!

toledo birth documentary photography photographer newborn family http://www.wellspringphoto.com/blog

My whole dream team was there (even Tab behind the lens). I think Tiny was waiting for everyone. I really needed every person in this room to be there.

Here is where the freight train began. The most powerful feeling I’ve ever had. I love how hubs was so gently cradling my head to support me.

I’m surprised these two were this far (2ft) away. Also I love that they are holding hands. I do remember hearing them cheer me on.

Little Tiny girl..we adore you so very much. More than you will ever know. Thank you for surprising our family in the best way!

Daxton is Born! {Toledo Birth Photographer}

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

It never ceases to amaze me when people ask me to photograph the birth of their child. I just think, little old me? Why do I get to witness this incredible, beautiful, private event in a stranger's life? I really don't know how I got so blessed to be to the point where people trust me not only with capturing these once in a lifetime moments (and truly each photo is just one second and then everything changes), but also trust me emotionally with their stories. Here is Daxton's story:

toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

I got a text at about 6am, Kayla was in labor and had been for 3 or so hours. Her contractions were five minutes apart. I thought to myself 'heavens! this could be a fast day!!'. I heard again at about 7:30 that she was 2cm, contractions had slowed to 7 minutes apart but she was staying because she was a day past due date. I settled down a bit knowing a first time labor can be anything! I was just reflecting on what the day might bring. Thinking about her, and Darin, and obviously Daxton. Wondering when he might come earthside, anticipating Kayla and Darin's reactions to meeting their first born for the first time. toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

I texted with Darin all day, getting updates as they came in. At about 5pm I headed up to the hospital. She was 8cm and doing beautifully. Kayla had opted for an epidural but it didn't quite take and the pitocin was making contractions hard for her. I never did hear her make any noise above heavy breathing. Darin was right by her side, exhausted as well, both keeping positive and working together to bring this beloved boy into their arms.

There is something so beautiful about a woman in labor. Kayla in particular really, doing literally the most important work of her life. Working to begin a new life, not only Daxton's but her own. So powerful, yet peaceful. Pain, yet joy.

They fixed Kayla's epidural, and so Darin got some rest before the final big work.

toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

The other thing that amazed me was all the supportive women who were there for Kayla, all of her sisters, her best friend, her mom and Darin's mom. While Darin rested all the women took turns rubbing Kayla's back and arms. It was exactly what she wanted and what she needed in that moment.

Before anyone knew it, it was time to begin the last part but the hardest part of bringing Daxton earthside. toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

Kayla was so ready. You could just see the determination in her face.

toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

Darin's face says it all. I really love watching Dad's during pushing. So proud of their woman, shocked by her power and ability, falling deeper in love for her giving of herself for this new life to love.

toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

One last shot of Daxton on the inside. I remember looking at her belly thinking how beautiful it really was. So perfectly round, awed that there was a precious life that had grown there.

Kayla pushed HARD for an hour…..then suddenly…

toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

This was the second time he calmed down. Again he knew 'This is my mom!"

toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

Kayla nursing for the first time. Again, could she be anymore beautiful? She made a human, gave birth to this human, and is now feeding him all with her amazing body. That is the epitome of womanhood right there. Plus they finally got to relax just the three of them, after all of their hard work and a long day.

toledo newborn birth baby family photography photographer midwives natural ob http://www.wellspringphoto.com

I know this look too. It's the "holy smokes I love you so much, and what just happened?!?"

Finally Darin's turn to hold him πŸ™‚ I LOVE how tiny Daxton looks in his hands.

It’s a GIRL! {Toledo Birth Photographer}

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

The birth story for this one is epic, one for the books. Because she came so quickly some of the photos are via iphone, and from my hubsy. This is a birth story (not too graphic) but still it's personal. If you don't want to read or view photos please move on to another post! πŸ™‚ For you birth junkies you will love it!

2am Bean comes into my room to wake me up, he likes to know I'm in the house. I walk with him back to his room and I tucked him in, kissed him goodnight. Normally I head back to my room asap because I'm pooped but on this night I lingered. I was looking at his precious curls and the curve of his cheeks, his perfect lips and eyelashes. I was feeling swooney over how lucky I am to be his mommy. I wondered how much longer it would be just us. I kissed him one more time before going back to bed.

I couldn't fall asleep. I'd been having insomnia for a couple weeks where I would wake up at 2ish and just be awake for an hour or more. I felt too tired to read (and I love reading so it usually wakes me up) so I decided to play games on my phone until I got tired.

2:47 I felt something. A contraction? A cramp? Maybe I just need to go to the restroom.

2:50 hm..there it is again.

2:57……3:03…..3:07…..3:09……3:11……3:19….Ok I don't know what this is. Totally inconsistent and really in my back, not where I would expect. I'm timing them on my phone, they are averaging 4 mins but again these feelings aren't consistently apart, even the length is everywhere. 30 sec, 1 1/2 min, 2 min, 10 sec. Plus all the contractions were in my back, which I didn't expect. (I now know she was posterior).

4am Hubinator hears me breathing. "Are you ok?" "yeh" what's going on?" "I dunno,??"…silence for a couple of feelings. "I think you're in labor." "You think so?" "I think we need to pack and you should call your mom." They're now averaging 3ish minutes.

I attempt to pack, my body is moving slowly. I'm uncomfortable but not in pain. I'm calm, breathing, relaxed. I was feeling open and accepting of whatever the day would bring. Still I realize I for some reason can't physically move the suitcase. I decide to call my mom since picking up a phone doesn't seem impossible.

4:30 I call my mom. "Hey mom." "Hey honey, are you in labor?" "I think so but I'm not sure." "well whats going on?" "well I might be having contractions but they're really inconsistent." "ok I'll pack my stuff and come on over." (There may have been more to this conversation but I don't remember. I decide to go back upstairs to try to pack. Now they are averaging about 1 1/2 mins. Somewhere in here I texted Rachel to tell her I may be in labor? I wanted my essential oil expert in case it got unbearable.

4:40? I called Tabitha and told her we had to leave right away. They were a few seconds apart at this point, but I still somehow thought we would make it to the hospital.

4:47 I texted my mom please hurry….at this point they were coming every other second or so. I was beginning to worry we wouldn't make it. Meanwhile Hubsyis still packing and calling the midwives and the doula and my parents.

4:50ish? Tranisition started, contractions were one on top of another, double peaking, lengths were still all crazy. Hub came in and I said "We are not going to make it, we are having this baby here….why aren't they stopping? They just keep going no break" Hub knelt down and cradled me and said "You're doing great, this is going to be over really soon and you're doing just fine." I felt myself relax further into my body when he said that. He got up I'm not sure what all he was doing because he was doing so much.

4:55ish? My parents come racing in the house. My Dad asked if we had called an ambulance, which we hadn't. The thought never occurred to us. At this point I was nearing the end of transition, I screamed for the last twoish or so contractions, that pressure in my back was really difficult to breathe through at this point.

4:58am And then I felt her move suddenly down. I said "this baby is coming right now!" So my mom helped me crawl into the bathroom. I asked her to turn on the water in the tub. I was still somewhat in denial, I thought if I got in the tub I could maybe slow labor down so I would get to the hospital, I simultaneously thought it would make pushing feel better. I also said call Tabitha, we need photos. My mom said "that is not going to happen." Hub came racing in. I knew my dad was coming over so I had put pajama pants on (during transition) because I didn't want my dad seeing me in underwear haha. So Hubs and my mom got my jams off and her head was coming out already, that's when my water broke. With two contractions back to back (about a minute and a half?Maybe less?) she was here. I was upright on my knees (trying to climb into the tub still haha) and so I really didn't feel like I pushed, at least not consciously. I felt my body just did everything for me. First contraction I yelled "Mommy this hurts way more than I thought it would!" With the second contraction I yelled "Lord Jesus get this child out of me!"  I had all the pressure in my back, so no ring of fire or anything like that.

5am (I know this because of the timestamp on my photos) My mom and Hubsy caught her and I was facing the tub and didn't see her. Hub said "It's a girl, we have a daughter!!" "I said we do? Grab the camera!!!" He somehow got photos and videos of her at just seconds old. He was so so calm and collected. They helped to turn me around and I looked at her and she immediately wanted to nurse.

He ran downstairs to get my dad and they covered me so he could come in. We all were sitting in a heaping crying pile on the floor and I got to introduce my daughter.

5:15 the EMTS arrived, Hub had called them at some point. They waited to examiner her until she finished nursing….she didn't finish for three hours but she did take a break about forty minutes later. They didn't worry about her airways since she was nursing so well. The placenta had come out on it's own so they got that when I stood up and they cut her cord (so she got all of her blood from her placenta).

6am Cupcake was still nursing but I didn't think she would stop so I stood up, got re-dressed the rest of the way and walked downstairs to the gurney. They transported us to St.Vincents to be checked out by my midwife. I felt fine so I really thought we could have driven ourselves or skip at that point but I figured I should see my midwife.

So that's her story, to the best of my memory. It was chaotic and I was so focused on my breathing and really the only thoughts in my head were preparation thoughts about packing and calling who needed to be called and making sure Bean was taken care of.

Thankfully my light sleeper Bean slept through the whole thing until I pulled away in the ambulance. He woke up literally as we pulled away and came to the hospital right away.

7am Bean met his best buddy for life , Cupcake. :))

My sweet beautiful Cupcake. We prayed and waited a year for you. Finally the day came when that test had a plus sign and we just praised God. We still had to wait another 38 weeks to meet you but I knew you were meant to be part of our family. You have added so much joy and love to our family already. We love you more than you will ever know.

Cruze is Born {Toledo Birth Photography}

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

I have to say, photographing births is my favorite thing next to photographing newborn sessions. There is just something so magic and truly holy about a new life entering the world. Getting to witness it is quite the privilege, I always feel like I have a V.I.P. pass to life's greatest event.

Ashleigh's labor went so quickly I BARELY made it before it was time to push. Not much sitting around time, and she's a champ because pushing was only a few minutes!

Here they are, falling a little deeper in love…about to welcome their fourth baby into their family.

This never gets old to me. Seeing that pure joy on parents faces as their tiny awaited loved baby arrives. It always comes spilling out.

Grady’s Birth {Toledo Birth Photography}

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Ahhh, another amazing night last night! It was going to be an ordinary night, taking my Bean to the park and then for ice cream. That morning I had received a text from Stacy going over her status and I figured I'd be going in the middle of the night. NOT SO! I got another text at 3:30 saying they were on their way to the hospital so I was on stand by. Got my next text at 4pm, they were in triage and she was 4.5cm. Got another text at 5pm she was 7.5cm! Needless to say I shot up there as fast as I could! She was going three times as fast as an average labor! I got there and it was another hour and they were prepping her to push! She pushed for 45 minutes and so Grady was born! They decided not to find out the gender and so they had this big moment and realized the baby was a he and he was definitely Grady. They both got teary and lots of smooches to go around. I of course was balling. The doctor asked if I was ok…I said yeh but how often do I get to see this really??!? I mean there was a brand new well loved human in the room! Nothing more beautiful than that! (PS check out the beginning of their story here.) Grab the tissues…here we go:

Adam and Stacy, thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of Grady's first moments on this earth and your first moments as a family. I am so incredibly honored and now every time I think of you guys I know I will tear up. What a happy day. He is amazing and I am so thankful I got to witness his birth. PS the nursing staff rocks. They were so kind and helpful, and let me ask all kinds of crazy questions! What does that thing do? What's that for? etc etc. Special shout out to Corey and Shannon who were so great at allowing me to do my job (and even encouraging me!)

Be sure to check back for Grady's first official photo shoot. So excited to see that little man again!

Baby Rankin’s Birth Story {Toledo Birth Photography}

Monday, March 28th, 2011

I was sitting here hanging out with my own little bean when at 8pm I got a phone call from Kailey's mom "Her water broke we are on the way to the hospital!" I was so excited! I had been waiting for that phone call for a while! I got a text from hubby Rankin once they were at the hospital and she was only 3cm. I figured I had all night pretty much, I'd get some sleep and probably get called closer to time early in the morning! Boy was I wrong! I got a call 90 minutes later she had jumped 3 cm!! I quickly packed up my stuff and headed to the hospital. It was a short drive but by the time I got there she was at 7cm. Kailey was aiming for an entirely natural birth so when I got to her room she was sitting on the birthing ball in the shower. Her doula was massaging her back while she was contracting and Rankin was busy aiming the hot water on her back. Every now and then her doula, Mandy, would take a break and mom would step in. She also had her aunt Jody bringing water to everyone. It was quite the team. She also had Mimi and Grandpa, and Rankin also had his mom and sister Janice there. Kailey had such big group cheering her on and encouraging her. I was thrilled and honored to be a part of it. I was busy taking photos when suddenly Kailey felt different, some more pressure. The nurses came in and decided she needed to move back to her bed because it was almost time to push! Only a half hour after that she did begin to push and she only pushed for 20ish minutes! She had her completely natural birth and it was really something to witness. Her first baby and only 5 1/2 hours of labor beginning to end.  Baby Rankin is beautiful and I can't wait to see him again on Wednesday for his newborn shoot! There are tons and tons of photos so I hope you have time and some tissues:

I’m a Mom! {Toledo Birth Documentary}

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

It was the morning of the Pinnacle bridal show…4 am. (one hour after Tabitha predicted I would go into labor) I woke up and felt something. I thought nah, it's two weeks early. So for the first four hours of my labor I let hubby sleep, and I worked. I edited, uploaded images sent a few emails (watched Seinfeld). I suddenly realized it had been a very consistent four hours so I woke hubby and we started to pack last minute stuff and I had to pack all the stuff for the bridal show! Couldn't leave Tabitha hanging there! Finally six hours into labor hub and headed to the hospital. Once we were there they told us I was already over halfway done!The rest of labor flew by and before I knew it I was a mom πŸ™‚ I asked Tabitha months ago to capture the experience so we would have it forever (don't worry nothing personal…just good stuff!) I was a bit uncomfortable with the idea of a birth documentary since it is such a personal and vulnerable experience but after seeing the images I could not be happier that I did and I think it is something every couple should consider! I won't be posting our child's name for privacy sake but I thought you might want a peek into my new life πŸ™‚ PS go over to Tabitha's blog and tell her she is amazing, literally every time I look at these photos I begin crying. Think hub might hide them from me πŸ™‚ Oh and just so you know we WON BEST BOOTH at the Pinnacle bridal show! Quite the day for Wellspring Photography! Big shout out to our graphic designer Andrea and Lisa for holding down the fort for us! We literally could not have done it without you two!
